Rentokil - Protecting Your Home from Woodworm Problems

Woodworm describes a number of species of wood-boring beetles that attack wood. The term “woodworm” is used as it is the larval or “worm” stage of the insects’ life where they bore and eat wood.

Woodworm

The threat from woodworm is most severe when they attack timber in buildings. Over time, the woodworm holes weaken the timber and can eventually lead to the collapse of the building.

There are various species of woodworm including furniture beetles and death watch beetles. Consult our pest guide to wood-boring insects for more information about types of woodworm.

Treating Woodworm

Woodworm in furniture may be treated with a range of appropriate products available from general and hardware stores.

However, woodworm in the home should be treated by professional technicians as failing to deal with the problem can lead to structural damage.

Many woodworm infestations go undetected for years by which time the damage can be widespread and severe. It is important to act swiftly if you are concerned that you may have a problem with woodworm.

Woodworm Survey

Before we undertake any treatment, a Rentokil Surveyor will conduct a thorough inspection to assess the extent of the woodworm problem. They will also check for associated problems such as rot or damp.

All areas at risk from woodworm must be checked and so the surveyor may inspect under floor boards and roof timbers in the loft. We will of course ensure that everything is put back and tidied.

The survey will highlight the type of woodworm infestation, how far it has spread and the appropriate treatment. It will also identify if any timbers need to be replaced.

To ensure a cost-effective solution and minimise disruption, we recommend that only infected or damaged areas are treated.

Woodworm treatment by Rentokil

Woodworm is treated by targeting at least one stage in the development of the beetle. The infestation will be brought quickly under control, but with their long lifecycles it may take a year or more before a woodworm infestation completely dies out.

The woodworm treatments we use are powerful but are applied to minimise exposure to people, pets and the environment. They are generally applied as a fluid or injected into the woodworm holes to ensure focused treatment, but fogging machines may be used in enclosed areas.
